The Story
I developed CancerWalk because no one should have to face cancer alone. Below is the story of my journey with cancer.
Thanks to God, I can call myself a survivor.
It was suggested that I get a biopsy for a spot that had been watched by doctors for quite some time. The oncologist was certain the result would come back benign — it did not, it was malignant.
Hearing the words, “I’m sorry you have cancer.”—those words sent my head into a surreal tailspin.
What did this mean? What will happen, what will be my treatment, chemo, radiation? What should I expect? Cancer is not the number 1 killer, but I believe it is the most dreaded disease. Nothing about it is one and done. It can be totally life-altering. Who can I talk with about it?
My local hospital is overworked, especially in the cancer center. My surgery wasn’t going to be scheduled for more than 8 weeks. My daughter suggested I get a second opinion to check my options. Seemed like a good idea, but where, how?
Little did I know how easy it was to get a self-referral with one of the top cancer centers in the U.S., in Manhattan. The entire experience with them was top-notch. The surgeon was able to get ALL the cancer, all margins were clear. I’m now being checked regularly, knowing how quickly my clean bill of health can change.
And to share with you a message of comfort and hope that my sister wrote for me when we vacationed together soon after my diagnosis and surgery.
