A manager’s first job is dignity
Mar 12, 2026
Managers, if an employee shares a cancer diagnosis, your first job is not to “fix it.”
Your first job is to protect dignity.
A simple order that helps:
“Thank you for trusting me.”
“What do you want kept private?”
“What support would actually help?”
“Let’s adjust workload without assumptions.”
Employees remember how safe you made it to be human.
HR/Benefits leaders: if you want a one-page version of this to share internally, message me and I’ll send it.
