A manager’s first words matter
May 07, 2026
When an employee shares a cancer diagnosis, most managers want to help.
But many don’t know what to say.
A few words that help:
Thank you for trusting me.
What would you like kept private?
What support would actually help right now?
A few things that don’t:
Let me know if you need anything.
Stay positive.
I’ll tell the team so they can support you.
Support starts with dignity.
That’s one reason I believe manager training matters so much.
