If an employee tells you they have cancer, here’s a simple rule:
Do not make them manage your discomfort.
Better responses:
"Thank you for telling me."
"I’m here."
"What do you want kept private?"
"How can we support you well?"
Less helpful:
"Everything happens for a reason."
"Stay strong."
"Let me know if you need anything."
The goal is not to sound impressive.
The goal is to make someone feel safe.
